We will evaluate the efficacy of Urban GEMS using a multimethod quasi-experimental design. Participants will complete a battery of pre- and multiple post-test measurement. We will examine within individual changes over time with each student serving as his/her own control. Using a combination of self-reported survey data, academic achievement data, observational data and project documentation, we will triangulate the findings to assess which components of the program offer promise on improving the lives of young people.
We will also focus on gaining a better understanding of resource needs and cost effectiveness of our program. We will replicate our findings by introducing the Urban GEMS program to other settings once we have successfully demonstrated that the program is in fact efficacious.
